Geneva to Interlaken by Car: Scenic Drive Through Switzerland
One of Switzerland's most beautiful drives. Via Fribourg, Bern, or via the motorway. Routes, stops, and tips.
Route: Geneva to Interlaken
The distance from Geneva to Interlaken is approximately 195 km and takes 2 to 2.5 hours by the direct motorway route. The scenic route via Fribourg and Bern adds about 30 minutes but rewards with stunning Pre-Alps scenery and the opportunity to stop at Switzerland's medieval capital Bern.
Stop in Bern
Switzerland's capital Bern is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with one of Europe's best-preserved medieval old towns. The arcaded shopping streets (Lauben), the Clock Tower (Zytglogge), and the Bear Park are all within walking distance of each other. Allow at least 2 hours - or more if you want to visit the Einstein Museum (Albert Einstein lived here when he formulated his theory of relativity).
Arriving in Interlaken
Interlaken sits between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, with the Jungfrau massif visible at the end of the Lauterbrunnen valley. The town is the launching point for the Jungfraujoch (Top of Europe at 3,454m), accessible by cogwheel railway. Adventure sports including paragliding, skydiving, and canyon swing are hugely popular here.
Getting Around the Interlaken Region by Car
The car is excellent for exploring the lakes around Interlaken. Drive around Lake Thun to Thun town (beautiful castle). Lake Brienz is even more beautiful - the turquoise water is stunning. Note that some Alpine villages (Wengen, Murren, Grindelwald) are car-free - park in the valley and take the train up.
