Swiss Motorway Vignette: Complete Guide
What is the Swiss motorway vignette, how much does it cost, and do rental cars include it? Everything explained.
What is the Swiss Motorway Vignette?
The Swiss motorway vignette (Autobahnvignette in German, Vignette autoroutiere in French) is a road tax sticker required for all vehicles using Swiss motorways. It is an annual sticker that covers all Swiss motorways with no time limits. The current price is CHF 40 (approximately EUR 42).
Do Rental Cars Include the Vignette?
Yes - if you rent a car in Switzerland, the vignette will always be included. It is affixed to the windscreen of the rental vehicle. You do not need to buy it separately. However, if you rent a car in France or Germany and drive into Switzerland, you will need to purchase a vignette before using the motorway.
Where to Buy the Vignette
You can buy the vignette at: Swiss border crossing points, all Swiss post offices, most Swiss petrol stations, ADAC/TCS/ACS automobile clubs in neighbouring countries, and online at the Swiss Post website (with postal delivery). The vignette is not sold at airports or tourist offices.
Driving Without a Vignette
Driving on a Swiss motorway without a valid vignette results in a fine of CHF 200 plus the cost of the vignette. Police conduct random checks and there are fixed cameras at some locations. The fine applies to all vehicles including foreign-registered cars. There is no grace period.
